Angry Pelican Flounder

Body slender (depth ~34% SL), tapering; head ~23% SL, front profile smooth, little or no notch before upper eye; eyes on left side of head; eyes close-set, separated by < eye diameter; lower eye not before top eye; eye diameter 26% of head length; mouth very large, top jaw 60% head length, ends just behind rear edge of eye; teeth small, on both sides of both jaws; gill rakers short, moveable, 4-8; dorsal fin ~125, origin well before top eye; pectoral rays not branched; anal fin ~89; pectoral 14, eye side pectoral larger than blind side fin; eye-side pelvic fin with origin under lower eye, with much longer base, situated on body midline, its origin before that of blind-side; lateral line on eye side only, with distinct arch over eye side pectoral fin, no branch under lower eye; scales small, smooth, lateral line ~140.

Eye side pale brown, covered with small spots; 3 dark blotches on straight part of LL, center blotch largest, other two inconspicuous; peritoneum black.

Reaches 32.8 cm

Lives on deep soft bottoms.

Depth range: 160-585 m.

N Carolina to the central Caribbean.
