Body a deep oval, (depth >40% of SL) tapering to a narrow tail base; eyes on left side; head blunt in adult, more so in males, a slight notch before upper eye in females; between eyes very wide in large males; snout with spines in male, (several on eye rims, biggest on front profile above lower eye, & top jaw groove), snout with short knobs in female; mouth relatively small, reaches under front of lower pupil; teeth ~equally developed on both sides of jaws, in 1 series of fixed teeth on each jaw, front teeth enlarged, no canines; gill rakers long and slender, 8-11 + 18-24; dorsal fin 78-85; anal fin 63-71; pectoral fins on both sides of body, with branched rays, male with top ray of eye-side fin long, reaching onto tail fin; pelvics symmetrically positioned on belly, base of eye-side fin on body midline, short bases; tail fin bluntly rounded; urinary papilla on blind side, immediately behind anus; lateral line well developed on both sides, from edge of opercle to tail base, eye-side line ~straight, no branch under lower eye; scales rough on eye side, smooth on blind side, 40-43 on lateral line, snout fully scaled.
Pale tan; two yellow bars between eyes; iris with broad yellow inner ring; body with irregular yellow blotches and spots; dorsal and anal fins with inner 1/4 yellow.
Reaches 14 cm.
Lives on soft bottoms.
Depth range: 139-215 m.
