Gutherz’s flounder
Body deep; eyes on left side; upper margin of head concave before eye; teeth small, conical, 1 row on jaws, equally developed on blind and eyed sides; lower gill rakers 9-11; dorsal fin origin ~over or slightly before top eye, 1st 2 rays short, next 2 long (longer than head in small fish), 5th slightly elongate, front rays without prominent fleshy projections at tips, dorsal rays 64-74, 32-36 rays between origin of fin and center of upper ocellus; pelvic fins symmetrically positioned on belly, short bases, eye-side fin less than twice as long as blind side fin, base of neither fin on body midline; pectoral fins on both sides of body, with branched rays, fin larger on eye side; urinary papilla on eye-side, anus on blind side; lateral line well developed on both sides, strongly arched over pectoral fin, with a branch under lower eye; scales on eye side smooth to touch (but with tiny serrations).
Brown, 3 large ocelli in a triangle on eye side, rear ocellus oval, on lateral line just before tail base, centers of ocelli pale (with or without dark spots) then a dark ring, then a diffuse light surrounding area ; blind side dark, less obvious in large fish.
Reaches 24 cm.
Lives on soft bottoms.
Depth range: 180-300 m.
