Body robust, quadrangular, depth 21-34% of SL; head relatively deep, rounded in profile; snout short (~33% head length); jaws reach under fleshy front edge of eye; eye large (27-30% head length); depth of cheek below eye 13-15% head length; fleshy ridge along midline before dorsal fin; operculum with a short, blunt spine, serrated on upper margin, fine serrae on lower margin; vertical edge of preoperculum serrated; no barbel on rear edge of top lip; 17-18 gill rakers; dorsal fin VII, 24 rays, height of fin 12% SL; anal I, 22, its origin under dorsal rays 4-5; pectoral fin 16-17; tail fin with straight edge; scales rough on body, smooth on head; pored lateral line scales 83-84; with scales on bone between preoperculum and operculum.
Head and body dusky white, darker above; throat and belly white; body with ~22 long light yellow bars; dorsal fin dusky to clear, with yellow areas on membranes, those strongest in center and rear; anal fin clear, with yellow areas; tail fin yellow, to dusky with yellow center; pectoral clear, with dark spot in axil; peritoneum white, with dark speckles.
Reaches 35 cm.
Lives on rubble bottoms.
Depth range: 219-256 m.
