Longtailed jewelfish
Body elongate, oblong to oval, strongly compressed; head, strongly compressed; eye large; no fleshy papillae around edge of eye; front and rear nostrils close together; rear edge of front nostril with a flap, but no filament; mouth strongly oblique, lower jaw projecting, rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; no teeth on tongue; tooth patch on center of roof of mouth chevron shaped, not prolonged at rear; preoperculum with rear margin serrated, but no forward pointing spines on lower corner; 38-40 gill rakers; dorsal fin X, 14 (rarely 15), longest spine (usually no. IV) 12-17% SL, each spine tip ending in a short filament, anterior soft rays filamentous; anal fin III, 7 (rarely 8); pectorals 18 (rarely 16); pelvic inserted slightly before base of pectoral, 27-41% SL; tail fin forked, lobes with long filaments (49-110% SL); scales rough, without small accessory scales on head or body, 45-46 (42-48) on lateral line; head and jaws fully scaled, including lower jaw and throat; lateral line complete.
Head and body red; iris pale, front half with an outer blue ring; a broad yellow stripe from rear of eye along upper body, narrowing at rear and extending along upper edge of tail fin and the top filament; that yellow stripe bounded above and below by purplish red; dorsal fin yellow; anal and pelvic fins reddish; tail fin reddish, with yellow top and bottom borders.
Reaches about 53 cm, including the tail filaments.
Lives on deep reefs.
Depth range: 90-475 m.
