Veracruz white hamlet

Head and body deep, strongly compressed; forehead straight; snout relatively short; top jaw protrusible; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; teeth fixed; preoperculum angular, serrated, several small forward pointing spines on lower edge near the corner; gill rakers 17-18; dorsal fin X, 15, no notch after spines, membranes between spines not indented; pelvics long, reach to or beyond anus; tail fin slightly forked; lateral line scales 55; soft dorsal and anal fins mostly scaleless.

Head and body creamy white, body with several indistinct dark bars, and, sometimes, many faint thin blue bars; a wedge-shaped black bar below the black eye, joins an elongate black spot on the side of the snout, those black areas bordered with bright blue lines; 2-3 thin bright blue bars on head behind the eye, the first two of those continuing down onto the base of the pelvic fin and to the belly under the pectoral base; a large black blotch from the top to the bottom of the end of the tail base: pectorals yellowish; dorsal, tail, anal and pelvic fins yellow, the dorsal fin also with fine oblique blue stripes.

Reaches 15 cm.

Lives on reefs.

Depth range: 2-12 m.

Known only from the Veracruz reef system in the SW Gulf of Mexico.
