Longspine croaker
Body oblong, robust, with humped back, maximum body depth 27.6 -31% (usually <30%) of SL; head low and short, cavernous but firm to touch on top; distance between eyes 7.3-7.5% SL; snout overhangs small, horizontal mouth; teeth on lower jaw simple, in bands; chin without barbell; preopercle with 12 spines, the largest at the angle; gill rakers 6-8 + 11-13, slender; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal rays IX-X + I, 22-24; anal rays II, 7 (6-7), 2nd spine stout and long, =/> 1st ray; pectoral fin 21.5-24% SL; tail fin long, bluntly pointed; scales on body and all or most of head rough; soft dorsal and anal fins with 1-2 rows of scales along their bases and small scales on membranes for 3/4 distance from base; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin. lateral line pores 50 (50-51)
Silvery grey body and fins; pectoral and pelvics with a yellow wash; inside gill chamber blackish
Size: grows to 18 cm.
Inhabits coastal waters on sandy mud bottoms.
Depth: 1-50 m.
