Body elongate, compressed; bluntly pointed head; eye, nostril and nape cirri unbranched; dorsal fin XIX (XIX-XX), 7 (7-8), a notch between spines and rays; 1st anal spine of male long, free from rest of fin, modified as sexual organ; no ridge or fold along anal fin base; anal fin II, 15 (15-16); pectorals usually 13; pelvic fins I (internal), 2, inserted before pectoral base; all fin rays unbranched; lateral line continuous, front section arched, rear section straight; belly naked; smooth scales on rear of body.
Head and body pale brown to pale orange brown, with orange markings on head and orange spots along base of dorsal fin; lower head without pale spots; female with scattered, conspicuous small black spots on lower head and pectoral fin base; male with a dark, thick crescent mark on lower corner of preoperculum; body scales with darker rear edges; body with 2 rows of black blotches, upper row of 9 round blotches, extending onto dorsal fin base; central row of 6-7 larger blotches mostly vertically elongate ovals, rarely round; several dark spots along lower profile of tail base; male without a dark blotch at front of dorsal fin.
Reaches 2.3 cm.
Lives on reef crests and coral heads on sand bottoms.
Depth range: 0-5 m.
