Cuban gramma

Elongate, compressed body; eye large, snout short; mouth at front; teeth on jaws, and front and sides of roof of mouth; preopercle serrated; opercle with 2 short, flat spines; gill rakers long, 15-35; dorsal fin XII, 10; anal fin III, 10; pectorals rounded, 16; pelvics I, 5, with 1st ray elongated, sometimes reaching past anal fin base; short rays on upper and lower base of tail fin not thick and spiny; lateral line in two parts, upper part ending under end of dorsal fin base, lower part on tail base, 35-37 + 13-15

Head and body golden yellow; magenta along under center of jaws, throat and base of pelvic fins; dorsal fin yellow, with a magenta bordered black blotch on front 3-4 spines; anal fin yellow, with a faint magenta stripe along outer 2/3 of fin; pelvic fins magenta, with a dark line along second soft ray.

Reaches  4.5 cm.

Lives on reef dropoffs.

Depth range: 10-30 m.

Southern Cuba & the Cayman Is.

Note: Genetic barcodes of G. dejongi and G. loreto are identical according to Victor & Randall (2010), indicating very recent speciation.
