Body tapering to a very narrow tail base; no V shaped ridge on top of head; snout bluntly rounded, not projecting; eye large, ~1/4-1/3 of head length; chin with a barbell; no black pigment patches on tongue or roof of mouth; mouth moderately oblique, opens at front, extends back past eye; teeth in narrow bands; few or no teeth on front of roof of mouth; gill openings wide, extending above pectoral fins; gill rakers moderately long and slender, 2-3 + 8-11; fins without spines; 2 dorsal fins, 1st short based and triangular, second long based, 57-61; 1 long based anal fin that is not indented, 58-68; pectorals 21-26; pelvic fins before base of pectoral, outer 2 rays filamentous, bases well separated; tail fin separate from dorsal and anal fins, small, rounded, symmetrical; scales round, overlapping, not set at right angles, lateral line complete; longitudinal scales <90; a light organ visible as a moderate sized black pit on belly midway between anus and pelvic fin base.
Pinkish tan, abdomen bluish purple; head belly and sides with silver tint; outer edges of dorsal, tail and anal fins black; lips and chin black.
Reaches 15 cm.
On and above the bottom of the continental slope.
Depth range: 69-800 m.
