Spotted Pikeconger, Spotted Pikeconger Eel

Elongate, cylindrical at front, compressed at rear; head and body 25-26% of TL; long slender tail; head slender, conical; large eye; front nostril tubular, at front of snout, rear nostril a slit in front of center of eye; a long narrow snout without a soft tip; head relatively slender and conical; jaws long and pointed, with top jaw overhanging; jaw teeth of varying sizes, exposed when mouth is closed; jaws with 3 rows of teeth along sides at rear (outer row very small) and two rows at front; tip of lower jaw with 1-2 enlarged teeth; between top jaws with 3 irregular transverse rows of teeth, the last row largest; vomer with 1 central row of large teeth on roof of mouth plus a row of many, close-set small teeth along each side; between vomer and jaws with several rows of small teeth; pectoral fins present; dorsal fin origin in front of or behind gill opening; dorsal and anal fins confluent with tail fin; lateral line complete on head and body, 35-38 lateral line pores before anus.

Silver, mottled or speckled with small dark spots above the lateral line; stomach black, intestine black; vertical fins edged in black; inside mouth and gill chamber black.

Reaches 58 cm.

Lives on soft silt and mud bottoms.

Depth range: 100-915 m.

New Jersey to southern Brazil.
