Lucayana Cave Brotula
Body elongate, tapering to a narrow tail base; head deep at rear, snout depressed, forehead profile concave; top of head cavernous; eye small (0.9-1.0% of SL); top jawbone vertically expanded at rear, a small downpointing knob near lower rear corner; top jaw with 5-7 rows of granular teeth, lower jaw with 3-6 rows; center of roof of mouth with horse-shoe shaped arrangement of 2-3 rows of teeth; sides of roof of mouth toothless; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; 13-17 gill rakers: 3-5 broad plates + 1 long raker above, then 0-1 small plates, 2 long rakers with a small plate between them, then 6-8 small plates; dorsal rays 84-91; anal rays 63-69; pectoral base broader than long, pectoral 17-18; anal fin origin behind midpoint of body; tail fin 10 rays, fin almost unconnected to dorsal and anal fins; lateral line in 2 overlapping parts, front part on upper body, lower part along midside, 12-13 + 34-35; body covered with regularly overlapping scales; head with scales; rear of top of head with scales in center and sides; male penis without bone-reinforced pseudoclaspers.
Uniform light brown; 3 long gill rakers pale.
Reaches 10.8 cm.
Caves with a mixture of fresh and saltwater.
Depth range: 12-20 m.
