Voodoo Whiff

Body relatively deep (43-49% of SL); snout not projecting, nape convex and part of the body profile; eyes on left side, close-set, separated by a narrow, concave ridge; mouth medium length (upper jaw 39-44% of head length), ends under lower eye; teeth ~equally developed on both sides of jaws, fixed teeth in 1 series on each jaw, front teeth enlarged, no canines; gill rakers long and slender, 5+12-13; dorsal rays ~68, length of 1st dorsal ray 22-29% of head length; anal rays ~52; pectoral fin on both sides of body, with branched rays; pelvic fins symmetrically positioned on belly, base of eye-side fin on body midline, short bases, 6 rays; urinary papilla on blind side, immediately behind anus; lateral line well developed on both sides, eye-side line ~straight, from edge of opercle to tail base, no branch under lower eye; scales smooth to weakly rough; 52-55 lateral line scales.

Grey-brown, with many small white flecks on eye side; dorsal and anal fins often with 6-7 black spots in a row along inner half of fin.

Reaches 16.1 cm.

Lives on soft bottoms; common in estuaries and moves 20 km up into freshwater in coastal streams at altitudes of 60 m.

Depth range: 1-10 m.

The southern Gulf of Mexico to the SW Caribbean.

Note: may be conspecific with C. arenaceus.
