Body slender, elongate (depth 20-25% of SL), somewhat compressed; snout prominent, conical, projecting, very short (~1/2 eye diameter), projecting only slightly beyond lower jaw; rear of the mouth extends well behind the eye; lower jaw suspended below head; upper jaw rear bone bluntly rounded and short, ends ½ pupil diameter before preoperculum; lower gill rakers 23-27; gill branch under gill cover small (<eye); anal fin with short base, 15-17 branched rays, its origin behind center of body, ~under end of dorsal fin base.
Silver side stripe narrow at front, ¾ of eye diameter over anal fin.
Size: to 9 cm.
Coastal pelagic and in very low salinity estuaries.
Depth: 0-50 m.
The mouth of the Orinoco to Brazil.
