Shortspine Boarfish
Body deep (depth 62-83% SL), rhomboidal, strongly compressed; upper and lower body profiles convex; head small, with radiating bony ridges; forehead profile slightly concave; a distinct crest along nape; eye relatively large; mouth small, oblique, opens at front, top jaw protrusible; 18-20 gill rakers; dorsal fin continuous, IX (rarely X) spines, 3rd longest, 26-30; anal fin II-III spines, 1st longest, 23-27, spines separate from rays; soft dorsal and anal fins with long bases, scaly sheaths; pectoral fins bluntly pointed, with I spine, 12 (rarely 11 or 13) rays; pelvic fins I, 5, spine not or barely reaching anal fin origin; tail fin bluntly rounded; scales with a toothed keel at rear + small teeth, 51-56 along side; lateral line arched.
Pink to reddish, silvery below; fins whitish.
Reaches 15 cm.
On and above the bottom.
Depth range: 68-594 m.
The W Atlantic, New Jersey to the hump of Brazil.
