Head large, deep; narrow (<7% of SL) between small eyes; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; body elongate, compressed, deep, decreasing to slender tail base; preopercle with 3 pores at lower rear corner; opercle with 1 flat spine with 1 sharp point at upper angle; 2-4 long gill rakers; top jaw bone expanded vertically at rear, with a knob at lower rear corner; jaw teeth pointed, in bands; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; dorsal fin 66-82; anal fin 48-63; each pelvic fin consists of 1 long (reaching anal fin) filament, inserted under edge of gill cover; pectoral fin <16% of SL; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct, continuous, complete; scales small, imbedded, covering body, none on operculum, a broad patch of scales, 5-7 vertical rows on upper cheek; male sex organ with 2 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair a small triangular flap, inner pair about as long or slightly longer than outer pair, with a broad tip.

Preserved fish light brown.

Reaches 8.6 cm.

Coral and rocky reefs.

Depth range: 0-10 m.
