Head large, deep; narrow (<7% of SL) between small eyes; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; body elongate, compressed, slender, decreasing to slender tail base; preopercle with 3 pores at lower rear corner; opercle with 1 flat spine with 1 sharp point at upper angle; 2-4 long gill rakers; top jaw bone expanded vertically at rear, with a knob at lower rear corner; jaw teeth pointed, in bands; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; dorsal fin 71-82; anal fin 52-61; each pelvic fin consists of 1 short filament, inserted under edge of gill cover; pectoral fin <16% of SL; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct, continuous, complete; scales small, imbedded, covering body, none on operculum, in 6-9 rows on cheek; male sex organ with 2 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair wing-shaped, twice size of club-shaped inner pair, each of which has a rear appendix.

Light brown, fins with yellowish bases, clear outer parts.

Reaches 6.8 cm.

Coral and rocky reefs, also occasionally in mangroves.

Depth range: 0-15 m.
