Boehlke’s Brotula

Head large, deep; narrow (<7% of SL) between small eyes; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; body elongate, compressed, slender, decreasing to slender tail base; top jaw bone expanded vertically at rear, with a knob at lower rear corner; jaw teeth pointed, in bands; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; preopercle with 3 pores at lower rear corner; opercle with 1 flat spine with 2-4 points (in large fish) at upper angle; 2-4 long gill rakers; dorsal fin 75-84; anal fin 54-64; each pelvic fin consists of 1 short filament, inserted under edge of gill cover; pectoral fin <16% of SL; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct, continuous, complete; scales small, imbedded, covering body, none on operculum, in 5-7 rows on cheek; male sex organ with 2 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair wing shaped, inner pair smaller than outer pair, club shaped, with an appendix at rear corner.

Preserved fish: uniform brown.

Reaches 7.8 cm.

Found on coral reefs.

Depth range: 0-16 m.
