Seminole Killifish
Body slender, compressed; head flattened above, with straight to slightly convex upper profile; snout long (2-3 times eye diameter) and pointed; cover of eye not continuous with head skin; front nostril not tubular; mouth short (< 27% of head length), distinctly below level of center of eye, protrusible, top jaw twisted, lower jaw projecting, with 3-10 pores; jaws with outer row of pointed conical teeth, inner band of simple teeth; gill rakers short, stubby, 6-7; no spines in fins; dorsal fin short based, its origin before anal fin origin, 13-20 rays; anal fin with 3rd fin ray branched, 10-15 rays; pectoral with narrow base, rounded, inserted low on side, 18-19 rays; pelvics inserted well behind pectoral base; tail base long and slender; tail fin bluntly rounded; small smooth scales, 50-55 midlateral rows; lateral line reduced to a series of pits along side of body.
Male olive to brown above, with spotted pattern formed by small black dots at angles of scales; dorsal fin with narrow dark stripes; tail fin with dark spots, other fins clear. Female with paler colors.
Reaches 16 cm.
Fresh to brackish water.
Depth range: 0-1 m.
E & W Florida.
