Body deep, compressed, back high; head short, blunt; rear margin of bone under eye concealed by scales; mouth small, low, ~horizontal, lips fleshy; teeth in bands on jaws, outer ones larger, conical, none on center roof of mouth; a pair of conspicuous pores plus a central groove under the chin; 15-16 lower gill rakers; preopercle finely serrated; dorsal continuous but deeply notched, 4th spine longest, XII, 15-17; anal with III strong spines, 2nd very large, 9 soft rays; tail forked; scales moderate to large, rough, over entire body and head except front of snout, lips and chin, none on membranes between dorsal and anal soft rays; lateral-line scales 56-58; 7-8 scale rows between lateral line and base of first dorsal spine.
Pale yellowish tan; head blackish, with a broad silvery bar behind eye, 2 silvery stripes under eye, a black spot at top rear corner of operculum; body with 4-6 blackish stripes, bordered above and below by white stripes; a black spot surrounded by white on center of base of tail fin, 2 black spots on upper tail base; pelvics black, other fins yellowish; inside mouth and throat red.
Size: to 18 cm.
Habitat: hard bottoms in turbid waters.
Depth: 0-12 m.
SW Caribbean to Brazil.
