Body long; head relatively small, slender; top lip well developed, widest at sides; teeth in 1 series on both jaws on sides, 2 rows at front, slender, conical, with curved tips; nostrils well separated, tubular, front nostrils longer; 4 gill arches, all with gill rakers and gill filaments; sucker disc small and weak, lacking any papillae, connected to side of body by a fleshy fold; pectoral fin 23-25; no fleshy pad on lower pectoral base; median fins short; 1 dorsal fin, at rear, no spines, 7 (6-8); anal fin 7-8, like dorsal fin and under it; tail 6+6; no scales; lateral line present as pores on head only.

Head red above; body with ~7 broad red bars and interspersed red spots on a pale background from behind the pectoral fin to the end of the tail base; tail fin with two red bars.

Reaches at least 3.5 cm.

Lives on rubble & rock bottoms.

Depth range: 231-318 m.

Cuba, the NW and SE Caribbean.
