Caribbean Sculptured Sea Catfish

Head rounded, broad, slightly flattened; snout overhanging mouth; eye small; shield on top of head very rough, almost reaching to between eyes; no groove on center top of head; bony process behind head shield narrow and keeled, its base broader than its tip; bony plate before base of dorsal fin spine a narrow crescent; 2 pairs of close-set nostrils; no fleshy furrow extends across snout and connects rear nostrils; three pairs of barbels (on chin and both jaws), top pair reaching past pectoral fin; gill opening wide, membranes not adhering to breast; teeth on roof of mouth pointed, on 2 plates on each side, inner pair slightly separated, touching side pair to form a U shaped arc, the side plates largest and ~triangular; no gill rakers on rear surfaces of first two gill arches; gill rakers on front of 1st arch 13-14, on 2nd arch 13-15; bony plate above base of pectoral fin triangular, pointed; tail fin deeply forked; a complete lateral line, with branches to top and bottom base of tail fin, no scales.

Preserved fish: brownish above, whitish below.

Reaches 36.2 cm.

Known only from brackish water.
