Lovers’ Lake killifish
Body slender, compressed; head flattened above, with straight to slightly concave upper profile; snout about eye diameter, rounded; cover of eye not continuous with head skin; front nostril not tubular; mouth small, oblique, opens at front, protrusible, at about level of center of eye; top jaw twisted, lower jaw projecting; jaws with outer row of pointed conical teeth, inner band of simple teeth; 11 (9-13) gill rakers; no spines in fins; dorsal fin short based, 11-12 (10-13) rays, its origin over anal fin origin; 11-12 (9-12) anal fin rays, 3rd fin ray branched; pectoral with narrow base, rounded, inserted low on side, 16 (15-18) rays; pelvics inserted well behind pectoral base; tail base slender; tail fin bluntly rounded; small smooth scales; lateral line reduced to a series of pits along side of body.
Female olive above, paler below; fins clear except for dusky ends to tail and dorsal fins. Breeding male dark olive brown above, yellow below from head to anal fin; anal and pectoral fins yellow; dark vertical bars all along side and tail base; rear edge of tail fin yellow-green; dorsal fin with a prominent white-ringed ocellus.
Reaches 10.6 cm.
Saline lake.
Depth range: 0-1 m.
Known only from a saline lake (Lover’s lake) on Bermuda.
Note: closely related to F. heteroclitus.
