Body elongate, robust, compressed at rear; head flattened above, with straight upper profile; front nostril not tubular; cover of eye not continuous with head skin; mouth small, oblique, protrusible, top jaw twisted, lower jaw projecting, chin with 3-10 pores; jaws with multiseried teeth; usually 10-13 (9-16) gill rakers; no spines in fins; dorsal fin short based, usually 13-14 (11-15) rays, its origin over anal fin origin; anal fin with 3rd fin ray branched, 12-13 (11-14) rays; pectoral 18 (17-20) rays, with narrow base, rounded, inserted low on side; pelvics inserted well behind pectoral base; tail fin rounded; small smooth scales; lateral line reduced to a series of pits along side of body; scales before dorsal fin 12-15 (11-17); scales before eye absent.
Grey brown above, paler below; scales outlined in dark pigment. Males with pale spots, some of which form a series of ~9 thin irregular pale bars; pelvics and anal fin dark, with elongate clear blotches and pale outer margins; tail fin dark, with pale spots on its base, outer margin clear; dorsal fin dark, with pale spots, a dark ocellus at the rear base, pale outer margin.
Reaches 9 cm.
Freshwater and mangrove habitats.
Depth: 0-1 m.
Known only from Mangrove Lake on Bermuda.
Note: closely related to F. heteroclitus.
