Body elongate, compressed; bluntly pointed head; eye, nostril and nape cirri unbranched; dorsal fin XIX (XIX-XX), 9 (8-9), a notch between spines and rays; 1st anal spine of male long, free from rest of fin, modified as sexual organ; no ridge or fold along anal fin base; pectorals usually 13; pelvic fins I (internal), 2, inserted before pectoral base; all fin rays unbranched; lateral line continuous, front section arched, rear section straight, 15 (15-16) + 18-20 scales; belly and pectoral base naked; smooth scales on rear of body.
Head and body grey brown to reddish brown; 5 small black spots along rear edge of eye; lips with dark bars; body with 7 dark bars (that extend onto dorsal fin base) separated by broad pale interspaces, 2nd last bar on tail base incomplete, usually with 2 small distinct spots above and sometimes lower part breaking into spots; tail fin orangish; anal fin with an orange-yellow stripe along edge, a dark stripe inside that; male: head with small blue-white spots on side, a black spot behind 1st dorsal spine; pectoral fin of female with 2 red spots on base.
Reaches 2.3 cm.
Lives in rock faces and in boulders in seagrass areas.
Depth range: 0-6 m.
