Body elongate, compressed, decreasing to slender tail base; head large, deep; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; eyes large (2.9% of SL); narrow between eyes (<7% of SL); lower jaw with 8 rows of teeth at front, 2 rows at rear, inner row with 15 large teeth; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; top jaw bone expanded vertically at rear, a sharp projection at lower rear corner; jaw teeth pointed, in bands; preopercle with 1 pore above and 1 at lower rear corner; opercle with 1 flat spine at upper angle; 3 long gill rakers; pelvic fin = 1 short filament, inserted under edge of gill cover; pectoral fin <16% of SL; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct, continuous, complete, 2 rows of pores, upper row ~14 pores, row along flank ~25 pores; scales small, imbedded, covering body, a broad scale patch on cheek, reduced to 2-3 rows below; male sex organ with 2 pairs of pseudoclaspers, ~equal sized, very large, inner one like a forward pointing hook.
Preserved fish light brown; fins and inside mouth and gill chamber pale.
Reaches 7.5 cm.
Collected on reefs.
Depth: 5 m.
Known from a single specimen collected on the E Caribbean coast of Panama.
