Tobago Brotula

Body elongate, strongly compressed; snout blunt and rounded, with a distinct depression over eye; wide between eyes (>7% of SL); front nostril is immediately above the top lip; lower jaw without fangs, with 2 outer rows of granular teeth and 2 inner rows of small pointed teeth, 1 row of each at sides; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; rear of top jawbone covered by skin of top lip, with a small knob at lower corner; 3 pores at lower corner of preopercle, 1 at top of preopercle; opercular spine distinct; 3 elongate gill rakers on first gill arch; pectoral fin 17-19 rays; dorsal fin 67-72; anal fin 46-51; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct; no scales on cheek; scales on belly, pectoral base and nape; male sex organ with 3 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair 3 times size of inner rear pair, winglike, inner-front pair tiny, invisible without extraction, inner rear pair with a thorn.

Preserved fish uniform brown; fins translucent.

Reaches 3.3 cm.

Lives on rocky shoreline.

Depth range: 0-5 m.

Panama and Tobago.
