Puertorican Brotula

Body moderately elongate, strongly compressed; head small (24% of SL), wide and rounded; snout blunt and rounded; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; wide between eyes (>7% of SL); eyes 2.3% of SL, not sunk into head; lower jaw with fangs on inner row at rear; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; rear of top jawbone covered by skin of top lip, with a small knob at lower corner; 3 pores at lower corner of preopercle, none at top of preopercle; opercular spine distinct; 3 elongate gill rakers; pectoral fin relatively long (>16% of SL), 18 rays; dorsal fin 71; anal fin 57; pelvic long; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct; 3 scale rows on upper cheek, 2 on lower cheek; scales on belly, pectoral base and nape; male sex organ with 3 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair small, winglike, inner-front pair a ridge, much smaller than inner rear pair.

Preserved fish uniform brown; fins translucent.

Reaches 4 cm.

Lives on shallow caves on the shoreline.

Depth range: 0-1 m.
