Smalleyed Brotula

Body moderately elongate, strongly compressed; head large 27-29.5% of SL, wide and rounded; snout blunt and rounded; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; wide between eyes (>7% of SL); eyes very small (1.1-1.6% of SL), sunk into head; lower jaw with 1 large fang on inner row at rear; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; rear of top jawbone covered by skin of top lip, with a small knob at lower corner; 3 pores at lower corner of preopercle, none at top of preopercle; 3-4 elongate gill rakers; opercular spine distinct; pectoral fin relatively long (>16% of SL), 20-21 rays; dorsal fin 66-72; anal fin 53-57; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct; narrow band of 1-2 scale rows on lower cheek; scales on belly, pectoral base and nape; male sex organ with 3 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair a simple flap, inner-front pair submerged, barely visible, inner rear pair a small flap with a thorn.

Preserved fish uniform brown; fins translucent.

Reaches 4.5 cm.

Lives on reefs.

Depth range: 0-8 m.
