Longarmed Brotula

Body elongate, strongly compressed, high; head long, wide and rounded; wide between eyes (7-9.4% of SL); front nostril is immediately above the top lip; lower jaw without fangs, with 4 outer rows of granular teeth and 2 inner rows of small pointed teeth, 3 rows on sides where inner row teeth are much larger than outer row teeth; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; rear of top jawbone covered by skin of top lip, with a small knob at lower corner; opercular spine distinct; 3 pores at lower corner of preopercle, 1 at top of preopercle; 3 elongate gill rakers; pectoral fin long (16.7-20.3% of SL) 17-20 rays; dorsal fin 70-79; anal fin 55-64; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line in 2 rows of pores, upper row 17 pores, lower line along midside; large scales on cheek in 4 rows above, 3 rows below; scales on belly, pectoral base and nape; male sex organ with 3 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair 3 times size of inner rear pair, rounded with a broad base, inner-front pair very small, in a pocket, inner rear pair with a thorn.

Preserved fish pale brown; fins lighter.

Reaches 8.7 cm.

Lives on reefs and sinkholes; also deep in caves.

Depth range: 0-15 m.
