Kakuki’s Brotula

Body elongate, strongly compressed, high; head long, wide and rounded; wide between eyes (>7% of SL); front nostril is immediately above the top lip; rear of top jawbone covered by skin of top lip, with a small knob at lower corner; lower jaw without fangs, with 5 outer rows of granular teeth and 1 inner rows of small pointed teeth, 1 row of each at sides; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; 3 pores at lower corner of preopercle, 1 at top of preopercle; 3 elongate gill rakers; opercular spine distinct; pectoral fin 18-21 rays, fin short; dorsal fin 70-79; anal fin 53-61; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line in 2 rows of pores, upper row 14 pores, lower line along midside; scales on cheek in 3-4 rows above, 1-2 rows below; scales on belly, pectoral base and nape; male sex organ with 3 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair 2 times size of inner rear pair, winglike, with an inner knob, inner-front pair broad, inner rear pair broad with a thorn.

Uniform pale yellow.

Reaches 7.9 cm.

Lives on reefs and sinkholes; also deep in caves.

Depth range: 0-26 m.
