Haitian Brotula

Body moderately elongate, strongly compressed; head 24.7-29.5% of SL; snout blunt and rounded; wide between eyes (>7% SL), eyes small, partly covered by transparent skin; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; lower jaw with 3 very large curved fangs on mid-side; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; opercular spine distinct; rear of top jawbone covered by skin of top lip, with a small thorn at lower corner; 3 pores at lower corner of preopercle, 3-4 elongate gill rakers; pectoral fin relatively long (>16% of SL); dorsal fin 61; anal fin 47-48; pectoral 17; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct; no scales on head; scales on belly, pectoral base and nape; male sex organ with 3 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair triangular, inner-front pair ridge-like, smaller than inner rear pair, which has a small thorn at front.

Preserved fish pale brown, with tiny brown spots; a dark patch on top of head behind eyes; fins translucent; mouth and gill chamber pale.

Reaches 2.3 cm.

Lives on reefs.

Depth range: 0-5 m.
