Fearsome Brotula
Body moderately elongate, strongly compressed; head large (25.2-29.5% of SL); snout blunt and rounded; wide between eyes (>7% SL), eyes small, partly covered by transparent skin; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; lower jaw with 2-4 very large curved fangs on mid-side; rear of top jawbone covered by skin of top lip, with a knob at lower corner; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; 3 pores at lower corner of preopercle, 3-4 elongate gill rakers; opercular spine distinct; pectoral fin relatively long (>16% of SL); dorsal fin 58-65; anal fin 46-51; pectoral 16-19; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line with 3 rows of pores (a short one above operculum to origin of dorsal fin, an upper body line from over operculum to just before level of anal fin origin, a mid-side line from pectoral base to end of body); 4-6 large scales on upper cheek; scales on belly, pectoral base and nape; male sex organ with 3 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair small and lobed, inner-front pair disc shaped, larger than inner rear pair.
Preserved fish pale brown; a dark patch on top of head behind eyes; fins translucent; mouth and gill chamber pale.
Reaches 3.5 cm.
Lives on reefs.
