Gymnachirus nudus Kaup, 1858

Nude sole, Flabby sole

Body oval; eyes small, on right side; snout rounded; mouth small, arched, a little below snout; lips fleshy; rear edge of preopercle covered with skin; gill openings wide, united before pelvic fins; dorsal origin ~before level of eye; pelvic on eye side fused to anal; pectorals present or absent; lateral line from head to tail, straight, with 7-10 (usually > 7) accessory sensory lines at right angles to main line on right side; 3rd accessory LL 34-44 (26-59) pores; no scales, body covered with loose skin, eye side with or without short cirri in adults.

Eye side of adults with 13-21 (usually 15-18) dark narrow (3/4 width of pale interspaces) complete crossbars plus partial cross bars (often dotted) across body and dorsal and anal fins; ends of cross bars joined on dorsal and anal fins by a partial to complete dark line; tail with 3-4 complete crossbars; juveniles very dark body and fins on both sides.

Reaches 20 cm.

Lives on soft bottoms.

Depth range: 2-100 m.

Campeche (N Yucatan) to Brazil.
