Body elongate, tapering to tail; head relatively pointed; snout < eye; eyes on left side; between eyes narrow, with crest that lacks spines; mouth short, ends ~ front edge lower eye; teeth ~equally developed on eye- and blind-sides; gill rakers short and stout, 8; 119-125 dorsal rays; 98-108 anal rays; pectoral fin rays not branched, fin long (longer than head), lowermost rays shortest, 11-15 rays, no pectoral on blind side in adults; base of eye-side pelvic fin equal to base of blind-side fin, situated on body midline, its origin slightly behind that of blind-side fin; about 105 lateral line scales; lateral line on eye side only, strongly arched above the pectoral, no branch under lower eye.

Dark body and fins; pectoral black; a single large blotch on tail fin.

Size: 11 cm.

Habitat: shell and mud bottoms.

Depth: 90-570 m.

Florida to Brazil.
