Mexican Flounder

Head profile before eye convex; eyes on left side of head, separated by flat, narrow to moderate space; mouth large, top jaw 48-56% of head length, ends at or behind rear edge of eye; jaws on blind side not arched; 1 row of immovable sharp slender teeth on both jaws, large canines at front; gill rakers short and stout, 8-9 lower rakers; dorsal fin origin before top eye, 82-90 rays, front rays a little longer than rear rays and free of membranes; anal fin 63-69 rays; pectoral fins on both sides of body, with branched rays, eye-side pectoral 14-16 rays, outer edge of fin oblique; pelvic fins symmetrically positioned on belly, base of eye-side fin on body midline, short bases; urinary papilla on blind side, behind anus; scales small, smooth, 74-80 on lateral line; lateral line well developed on both sides, relatively straight, from just behind eye to base of tail fin, no branch under lower eye.

Brown; a large dark blotch behind base of pectoral fin; dorsal and anal fins with row of dark spots containing pale areas, 2-3 on each fin; eye-side pectoral plain; tail fin with 3 large dark spots on its rear border.

Reaches 33 cm.

Lives on soft bottoms.

Depth range: 6-150 m.

The Gulf of Mexico to Sao Paulo State, Brazil.
