Body an elongate oval (>45% of SL); male with 2 spines projecting forwards on snout, and 1 on chin, several small spines in front of eyes; female with smaller spines; eyes on left side; eyes relatively large (>30% of head length); wide between eyes; mouth medium length (upper jaw 39-44% of head length), ends under lower eye; teeth ~equally developed on both sides of jaws, in 1 series of fixed teeth on each jaw, front teeth enlarged, no canines; gill rakers long and slender, 3-5+9-11; dorsal fin 70-76 rays; anal fin 56-61 rays; central rays of dorsal and anal sharply longer in male, making both fins angular, front dorsal rays also elongate in male; pectoral fins on both sides of body, with branched rays, 2nd ray elongate in male; pelvics symmetrically positioned on belly, base of eye-side fin on body midline, short bases, 5 rays; urinary papilla on blind side, immediately behind anus; lateral line well developed on both sides, eye-side line ~straight, from edge of opercle to tail base, no branch under lower eye; scales rough on eye side, smooth on blind side, 33-37 on lateral line; snout scaleless.
Generally tan, body with scattered dark blotches; a large black spot on dorsal and anal fins immediately behind longest rays; 2 dark spots on tail fin, near its base, one above the other; pectoral fin barred.
Reaches 7.5 cm.
Lives on soft bottoms.
Depth range: 20-200 m.
N Carolina to Guyana.
