White marlin

Body elongate, moderately compressed; nape not elevated or only slightly elevated; bill rounded in cross-section; height of rounded front lobe of first dorsal fin nearly equal to greatest body depth; front of anal fin and pectoral tips rounded; first dorsal fin rays 38-46; second dorsal fin rays 5-6, close to first dorsal; first anal fin rays 12-17; second anal fin rays 5-6; pectoral fin rays 18-21, fin long and wide, can be pressed against body, tip rounded; pelvic fins slender, about equal to or slightly shorter than pectoral fins in large specimens and slightly longer than pectorals in small individuals; 2 keels on side of tail base; tail fin large, strongly forked; anus close to anal fin origin (<1/2 height of anal lobe); body covered with small stiff, elongate, bony scales, pointed at the front, with 1-2 points at the rear; lateral line an obvious single line.

Blue black to dark brown dorsally and silvery white ventrally; may display pale bars along side of body; first dorsal membrane blue-black, covered with many small black spots; usually no bars or spots on body.

Size: reaches 280 cm.

Habitat: pelagic, oceanic.

Depth: 0-150 m.

Tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic; New York to central Brazil.
