Head profile straight; eyes large; a groove present between upper lip and snout; no head pores; front and rear nostrils open in short tubes; tongue slightly concave; teeth in both jaws in 2 rows, on upper jaw outer row with 4-7 slightly enlarged teeth near front, inner row with about 40 smaller teeth; no teeth on center of roof of mouth; gill rakers 9+1; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI-VII + I, 10 (9-10); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 10 (9-10); pectoral fin 22-23 (21-24); pelvic fins I, 5, all rays branched, fins completely separate; tail fin long and pointed, 16-17 segmented rays, plus 7-8 short rays at upper and lower base; body scaled from inside pectoral to rear, with 25-28 rough scales in lateral series, 1-2 very rough scales on tail fin base; no lateral line.
Body pale; head has triangular dusky blotch below the eye, scattered melanophores along the margin of the upper lip; body and tail-fin base with four dusky bars, 1st strongest, under middle of 1st dorsal fin, last on tail fin base; a series of dusky blotches or saddles (on top of back between bars) that extend onto the dorsal fins; anal fin dusky along the outer edge; pelvic fins uniformly dusky; ventral rays of tail fin dusky, especially near their tips, top half of fin with two dark stripes.
Reaches: 2.5 cm.
Habitat: Sand-mud substrate.
Depth 92-586 m.
