Body slightly compressed; head rounded, no head pores; front nostril tubular, rear nostril a hole with a raised rim; top jaw short, ending under front of pupil; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII, first two elongate, + I, 9-10; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; pectoral fins 16-19; anal fin I, 10 (9-10); pelvic fins I,5, completely separate, no frenum between spines or membrane connecting inner rays, rays 1-4 branched, without fleshy or flattened tips, extend half way to anus; tail fin rounded; no scales; no lateral line.
Body bluey silver, with irregular, golden-brown spots, each spot outlined by small dark dots; sides with a series of irregular spots; head with 3 prominent bars radiating from below the eye, rear bar the darkest; top of body with 6 golden-yellow butterfly saddles; rear body with 3 internal black bars; dorsal fins with yellow-brown spots forming oblique bars; pectoral fin with upper 1/2 black, lower 1/2 white; pelvic fins white; tail fin white, a black bar at its base, fin crossed with 6 golden-yellow spotted bars.
Reaches 3.2 cm.
Habitat: drop off habitats with vertical faces or from spur and groove habitats just above the drop off.
Depth range: 11-27 m.
