Highspine Goby
Body slightly compressed; head rounded; snout length >5.5% of SL; no fleshy ridge between the nostrils; no head pores; front nostril a short tube, rear a hole with a raised rim; top jaw ends at front of eye; teeth in upper jaw in a broad band of tiny teeth with outer row of enlarged teeth; lower jaw with inner row of enlarged teeth at front, outer row with enlarged teeth; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII, the first two elongate in adults, + I, 9-10; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8-10; pectoral fins 17 (16-17); pelvic fins I, 5, completely separate, no frenum between spines or membrane connecting inner rays, rays 1-4 branched, without fleshy or flattened tips 5th ray unbranched in adults,extend half way to anus; no scales; no lateral line.
Adults white to somewhat yellowish, with the narrow body bars and head markings yellow; two bars cross the top of the head, each composed of two parallel lines of dark spots; a narrow bar runs from the eye to the upper jaw, another, extends downward from the eye, and another runs from the eye onto the cheek; top of the body with burnt orange markings, plus seven saddles and 5-6 bars composed of paired rows of dark spots on sides; a prominent black spot present at the front base of the dorsal fin; pectoral fin clear.
Reaches: 4.1 cm.
Habitat: coral and rocky habitats.
Depth range: 2.5-16 m.
Bermuda to Brazil.
