Boehlke’s goby

Body slightly compressed; head rounded, no pores; eye large; snout short (4.4-5.5% of SL) and deep; front nostril tubular, rear nostril a hole with a raised rim; top jaw extends past rear margin of pupil; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII, none elongate, +  I, 9-10; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9; pectoral fins 17 (16-18); pelvic fins I, 5,  completely separate, no frenum between spines or membrane connecting inner rays, rays 1-4 branched, without fleshy or flattened tips, extend half way to anus, 5th ray unbranched in adults;  no scales; no lateral line.

Body whitish; head with dark black/yellow bar under black eye, about width of pupil; upper lip and chin with dark small spots; three lines radiate from the eye; upper line, composed of small black and yellow spots, across top of head, joining line from other side to form a V; second from lower pupil to just above pectoral fin base composed of larger yellow spots; third line composed of small dark spots and larger yellow spots from under pupil to upper pectoral fin base and on to the upper pectoral rays; trunk with three internal short dark stripes along center of flank, and two rows of yellow, small, widely spaced spots along upper and mid-trunk; no distinctive pectoral fin color pattern; 1st dorsal with 3 dark stripes, one on lower third of fin, one on upper third and patches of small dark spots along the upper edge of the fin membrane; 2nd dorsal with 6 dark stripes; tail with upper and lower edges dark; anal fin dusky from element 4 to posterior edge; pectoral and pelvic fins clear.

Reaches 3.4 cm.

Habitat: found in areas of rock, sponge, or coral with fine white sand bottom and in sea-grass beds.

Depth range: 0-20 m, generally 12-19 m.
