Body and head robust; no head pores; eyes round, close together, at junction of side and top of head; mouth opens up, oblique, jaw reaching front edge of pupil, with projecting lower jaw; both jaws with bands of villiform teeth, inner row somewhat enlarged, outer row enlarged and canine like, smaller than lower jaw canines; lips thin; gill openings broad, extending to below preoperculum; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; gill rakers 3-4 + 12-14; dorsal fin VI (2nd spine elongate in large specimens, reaching 7th ray of 2nd dorsal) + I, 10 (10-11); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9 (8-9); pectoral fin 18 (16-18); pelvic fins I, 5 fully united, but with no front membrane between spines; scales large, rough, over entire body, smooth scales on breast and pectoral fin base, 32-36 in lateral series, 14-16 transverse rows; nape scaled, 16-18 scales before dorsal fin; scales absent from opercle; no lateral line.

Head and body pale, with orange to brown dark bars, dark bars become narrower at rear, are equal to width or wider than pale bars at fron, and narrower than pale bars at rear; 1st dorsal with a blackish band along its base, more intense at front end; dorsal, anal, and caudal fins with orange dots organized in bars.

Reaches: 4.3 cm.

Habitat: bottoms with rocks, sand, rubble, algae and large sponges; at edge of sand tilefish burrows with coralline rubble and at isolated coral heads.

Depth: 5-27 m.
