Dawson’s goby

Body chunky; no head pores; mouth opens up, oblique, with projecting lower jaw; gill openings broad, extending to below preoperculum; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI (2nd and sometimes 3rd spines elongate) + I, 10 (10-11); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9 (8-9); pectoral fin 18 (17-18); pelvic fins I, 5, fins fully united at base, but with no front membrane between spines; tail fin rounded; large, rough scales over entire body, 31(28-31) in lateral series; nape scaled, 12-14 scales before dorsal fin; no scales on opercle or preopercle; no lateral line.

Body cream, with 7 dark-brown bars; front 3 bars wider than cream colored interspaces; remaining dark bars equal to or narrower than cream spaces; head crossed by 4 bars; 1st dorsal with dark basal portion; second dorsal with 5 diagonal brown bars; tail fin with dark blotch at its base, scattered melanophores and 5 brown bars; anal, pectoral and pelvic fins with scattered melanophores.

Reaches: 2.6 cm.

Habitat: Occurs over sandy bottoms with many algae covered boulders; also in tide pools.

Depth: 0-65 m.
