Spotfin goby
Body robust, elongate; snout round; eyes large, closeset, protrude above top profile; a low crest on top of nape; a pair of pores between eyes; no preopercular canals; mouth opens at front, slightly oblique; teeth: 15-18 large canines in single row above, a band of smaller, curved teeth below; 1st gill arch outer face with a fleshy lobular raker with 3 projections above, a pair of fused, elongate rakers in the angle and 3 triangular rakers below, inner face with 7 stubby rakers; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI, (not elongate) + I, 12; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; pectoral 22-23; anal I, 13; pelvic I, 5, fins united in a disc with a frenum; tail fin elongate, pointed in center (38-62% SL, 38-49% in female); scales weakly rough on upper body near tail base, front of body with smooth scales; no scales on head and nape; 87 (70-92) scales in lateral series; no lateral line.
Upper 1/3 of head and body pale bluey grey, lower parts pale; head with orange spots above, orangeish bars radiating down from eye, oblique bars follow edges of preoperculum and operculum; upper front body with irregular orange-brown spots; 5-6 large, dark-centered rounded orange-brown blotches along mid-side, those separated by a blue streak bordered above and below by narrow orange lines; a pink-orange bar on pectoral base; a conspicuous large black spot at rear first dorsal fin; dorsals and anal with pink stripes; tail fin with oblique pink stripes.
Reaches: 16.5 cm.
Habitat: Sand and mud bottoms; lives in snapping shrimp burrows.
Depth: 2-101 m.
