Seminole goby

Head and body compressed; no crest on nape in either sex; wide between eyes; 2 pores on preopercle, no pore between front of eyes; mouth large, ~30 degrees from horizontal, upper jaw slightly larger in males than in females;  tip of tongue divided; no teeth on front of roof of mouth; lower jaw with 4-5 large canines in outer row; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII, spines II-V produced as filaments in both sexes, fifth longest, reaching half-way down the soft dorsal-fin, + I, 15 (14-17) rays; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin;  anal fin I, 15-18 rays; pectoral fin 21 (20-24), very long, 28.9% SL; pelvic fins I, 5, fused to form disc; tail fin long, oval (<40% SL); scales small, mostly rough; body scaled from rear forward to tip of depressed pectoral fin, head scaleless; lateral scale rows 60-62; no lateral line.

Males & Females: body pale with wide orange-yellow, blue edged lateral stripe along midline and two narrow paler yellow stripes  separated by a blue stripe above; body along anal-fin base yellowish with small dark spot of pigment at base of each anal ray; head pale below, and yellowish on snout and between eyes; an elongate iridescent blue line at top-posterior corner of the eye, another below eye extending to opercular margin; cheek and opercle each with a small spot of iridescent blue; pectoral-fin base with bluish coat; pectoral-fins pale; pelvic-fins dusky with yellowish cast; spinous dorsal-fin with two orange-yellowish stripes; soft dorsal-fin with three orange-yellowish stripes; anal-fin pale; tail-fin yellow on bottom, pale yellow on top, with median orange-yellow stripe which is continuous with similar stripe on body.

Reaches 7.5 cm.

Habitat: burrows in sandy bottoms, often associated with coral reefs.

Depth: 5-21 m.

North Carolina to Brazil.
