Body relatively deep, compressed; head profile round; front nostril a long tube, rear a raised rim; head without pores; papillae around mouth, on cheeks and operculum and over eye; mouth very oblique; tongue rounded to pointed; gill opening narrow, ~pectoral base; gill membranes with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI, none elongate, + I, 8 (8-9); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8 (7-9); pectorals 17 (16-18), rays unbranched; pelvic fins I, 5, fused into disc; tail fin short, round, with 17 segmented rays; scales rough, body scaled except chest and pectoral base, 25 (23-26) lateral rows, none on head and nape; no lateral line.
Body with dark bars lacking a pale central area; pale interspaces clearly narrower than dark bars, with a dark centerline; cheek usually with 2-4 wide bars radiating down from eye, occasionally with portions of bars broken into spots, and the dark bars covering most of the cheek; no large unpigmented area before preopercular margin; pectoral-fin base with an intense single spot, usually covering most of the base, the ventral portion of the spot often more intensely pigmented.
Reaches 2.5 cm.
Found at bases of patch reefs or coral encrusted boulders with undercut ledges.
Depth range: 4-52 m.
Bermuda.
