Sponge goby
Body very elongate; no head pores; snout wedge shaped in profile, triangular in top profile; upper lip connected to snout along most of its length; tongue bilobed; gill cover with scalloped margin; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin V-VII (1st 2 spines closer together than remaining spines) + I, 10-15; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9 (8-10); pectoral rays 12 (11-12), fan shaped; pelvic fins form a complete disk, all rays branched; segmented tail rays 17; one very rough scale on lower edge of tail base, series of 22 very rough scales along the bottom edge of body from the tail base to the anal fin; no lateral line.
Tan to grey with 17 dark bars and/or saddles, those breaking into spots at rear of body; head with dark lines radiating down and back from eye; dorsals and anal fins with dark edges
Reaches: 3.0 cm.
Habitat: lives in logger head sponges.
Depth: 13-57 m.
North Carolina to the SW Gulf of Mexico.
