Body very elongate; head pug-nosed; no head pores; a broad connection between upper lip and snout; teeth in upper jaw triserial in front, becoming biserial on sides, outer row enlarged; teeth of male larger; teeth in lower jaw in a "brush" 4 rows wide in front narrowing to uniserial on sides; 3-4 inner row anteriorly greatly enlarged and pointed back into mouth; gill cover with scalloped margin; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI-VII (1st 2 spines closer together than remaining spines,1st dorsal joins 2nd at base of both fins) + I, 12-13; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9 (8-10); pectoral rays 12 (11-14); pelvic fins form a complete disk; segmented tail rays 17; 2-4 very rough scales on bottom surface of tail base; no lateral line.

Head and body red-brown, a dense rather even peppering of small dark spots; dorsal fins and anal fin with dusky edges.

Reaches: 2.2 cm.

Habitat: lives inside sponges.

Depth: 0-30 m (known only from one collection).

The Bahamas to the S Caribbean.
