Body very elongate; snout pointed; no head pores; top lip partly connected to snout; tongue with slight indentation; teeth in upper and lower jaw in several rows, outer enlarged; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin IV-V (1st 2 spines closer together than remaining spines) + I, 12-15; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 10-11 (9-13); pectoral rays I, 12 (11-13); pelvic fins form a complete disk; segmented tail rays 17; anal fin base with a row of scales; scales along sides of body range from 0-25, rough; a series of very rough scales along the bottom edge of the tail base and 2 very rough scales on the sides of the tail base; no lateral line.

Head and body pale grey to tan, densely covered with tiny brown dots; body with about 16 blackish to red-brown bars, some connect to form Vs; tail fin with several dark bars; males have a dark subterminal or terminal stripe in the anal fin and both dorsal fins.

Reaches: 2.4 cm.

Habitat: lives inside sponges; common in Spheciospongia vesparia.

Depth: 0.6-41 m.
